Abstract: The problem of recruiting and retaining Teachers-of-Mathematics is a significant issue in Australian school systems, as it is internationally. The urgency to find solutions to these problems are being intensified by the dramatic increase in the number of teachers-of-mathematics teaching mathematics ‘out-of-field’ in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia. This presentation reports preliminary findings from a longitudinal study that investigates teachers-of-mathematics, including teachers teaching mathematics without qualification, in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia. The presentation will be informative to those concerned with and working with mathematics teachers globally.
