Abstract: In every urban circumstance, constructions produce arranged or spontaneous in-between spaces that inevitably contributes to the city fabric. The way these spaces are imagined, designed and utilized can directly influence the quality of life in the city. This paper intends to study transitional and threshold spaces in order to design improved in-between spaces that can enhance the dweller’s experience in the urban context. After bringing clarity to the definition of transitional spaces and understanding its primacy in spatial coherence and continuity, this work directs its efforts to derive and analyze architectural elements and features that can improve the quality of transitional spaces. This is done through the exploration of case studies where the optimal interplay of transitional spaces are observed. This research will also look at existing publications and competing theoretical frameworks proposed by architects in urban settings.
