Abstract: Sociolinguistics is the branch of linguistics that analyses the effects of social and cultural factors upon language patterns within a given speech community. The purpose of this paper is to research two aspects of these effects which are borrowing and code-switching. Borrowing and code-switching are consequences of two or more languages coming into contact. These two aspects generally result from a conversation between bilingual or multilingual speakers. More specifically, this paper will be an examination of Portuguese language borrowing from Standard Arabic. It gives a presentation of the Portuguese language and its historical relationship with Standard Arabic. Therefore, the paper will examine mainly the process of borrowing, which is a process by which a word is taken from a foreign language and ultimately used as a native term in another language.
