MONETARY AND NON-MONETARY INCENTIVES AND THE EMPLOYEES' PERFORMANCE IN THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Abstract: This study examines the importance of the monetary and non-monetary incentives and the level of performance of both teaching and non-teaching personnel of the Department of Education in the Schools Division City of Balanga, Bataan, Philippines. It specifically investigates the monetary incentives in terms of remuneration, in-kind supplements, and benefits while the non-monetary factors include recognition and involvement, career development/mentoring/coaching and the working conditions of the school environment. As such, it was found out that all of the aforementioned incentives were generally found to be very important to both teaching and non-teaching personnel of the department. Among the items included under remuneration, salary ranked first, while the provision for scholarship under in-kind supplement was considered to be the most important. Further, under benefits, the expected pension for retired employees was perceived to be very important for both the teaching and non-teaching personnel. On the other hand, the non-monetary incentives in terms of recognition and involvement, the employees considered involvement in goal setting as the most important receiving the highest mean rating, while on career development, administrative support revealed to be on top in terms of importance. In addition, the school and classroom facilities were a very important factor to consider in terms of the working condition. Generally, benefits as a form of incentive were found to be the most important when asked about the impact of incentives on employees’ motivation and the most preferred incentive. With regards to the relationship between the perceived importance of the incentives to employees’ performance, the data revealed that there was no significant relationship.
