WORK-LIFE BALANCE OF WOMEN ENGAGED IN CONVENTIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY JOBS

Abstract: Work-Life Balance is the balance between an individual's work and personal life. The challenge of work-life balance is one of the most significant struggles faced by modern employee. It includes proper prioritizing between work and lifestyle. A “good” work-life balance is explained as a state in which workers feel that they are capable of balancing their work and non-work commitments. As there is a sudden shift from traditional jobs to modern jobs, the work fields which were male dominated are slowly and progressively taken up by women. With empowerment comes responsibilities and responsibilities, comes with work pressure, both at home and at the workplace. The objective of the present study was to assess the work-life balance of working women (conventional and contemporary jobs) in relation to their of age (35-45 years), working hours (6 hours & 8 hours) and work experience (5-16 years). It was conducted within the premises of Jaipur city, Rajasthan, India and Snowball Sampling Technique was used for data collection. A total of 400 samples participants were included in the study (200 conventional and 200 contemporary job holders). A self-designed baseline proforma containing demographic profile of the participants like age, type of family, profession, marital status, working hours, work experience etc and “Work -life (W-L) Balance Scale”, developed by Pareek and Purohit (2010) was used to measure the work-life balance. Mean, standard deviation and “z” test was computed. Results revealed that women engaged in conventional jobs found to have a significantly better work-life balance as compared to those in contemporary jobs. Also, a highly significant difference was seen in the overall work-life balance with respect to categories i.e. age and working hours. As the number of working women is on the rise, the problems they face become quite serious and greatly influence their overall life. Therefore, it is important to study the problems working women face in the process of balancing their work and family lifecycle. The present study has great importance for working women, counselors and welfare organizations working for women.
