Abstract: Designing cities with families in mind- particularly physical and social infrastructure that encourage social interaction and support parenting practice- stands to be a growing concern globally. However, there has been very little research investigating the extent to which urban infrastructure has supported families to thrive in the city. The purpose of this paper is to perform a preliminary exploratory research study to examine the provision of infrastructure to support family well-being in the city. Three neighborhoods situated within Aoba Ward Yokohama were selected as the study area. The data are collected through a combination of field observation and ethnography participant observation method. The infrastructure discussed in the paper includes green infrastructure, cultural infrastructure, housing, education infrastructure and infraculture.
